Uranium milling has left a dirty and costly legacy on this state. Hundreds of millions of dollars are still being spent to clean up abandoned milling sites in Utah. And while the cost of cleaning these past mill sites is sobering, it pales in comparison to the stories of the people who live in these mill towns.

The tiny community of Monticello, Utah, was home to a federally owned and operated mill that processed uranium ore for the United States’ atomic weapons program.
