DETAILS
- Date: January 27, 2026
- Time: 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm, program starting at 6:30 pm
Location: Salt Lake City Library, 210 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111
Join HEAL Utah, LDS Earth Stewardship SLC, and RECA experts for a National Downwinders Day of Remembrance 2026 event honoring the communities harmed by decades of nuclear weapons testing and fuel-chain exposure throughout the West. This year’s event will reflect on the past, uplift the lived experiences of those still impacted today, and look toward a future free from repeated radioactive harm.
The program will begin with a brief overview on the history and recent expansion of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), followed by a powerful conversation with community members about the real human costs of the nuclear fuel cycle and how to navigate the RECA application process. We will also share current advocacy efforts connecting these harms to the renewed push for nuclear energy. The evening will conclude with a screening of Atomic Bamboozle, highlighting the ongoing fight to prevent a new generation of sacrifice zones.
Join us at the Salt Lake City Library for an informational event about the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act and the recent expansion to include all of Utah in the definition of Downwinders. We will provide resources on tools on how to determine if you or a loved one is eligible to apply for RECA compensation.
Following the information session, please join us for an enriching evening featuring a complimentary screening of ATOMIC BAMBOOZLE. The film follows anti-nuclear activists, tribal leaders, scientists and attorneys as they draw lessons from the decades-long campaign to shut down the Trojan Nuclear Power plant in Oregon and extend those lessons into a new struggle to stop small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) that are being aggressively promoted by the the Department of Energy and nuclear industry in response to the climate crisis.
