Nuclear Expert Webinar #2 - Beyond the Reactor: What Nuclear Means for Utah's Future

As HEAL Utah continues to track Utah’s rapid push toward expanding the nuclear industry, we have important questions about how companies and decision-makers will protect communities from potential risks. Nuclear development raises significant concerns, including high costs, lengthy timelines, limited transparency and public participation, long-term radioactive waste management challenges, and potential impacts on public health and the environment.

To continue the community conversation about radiation and its impacts on our health, HEAL will host the second webinar in our Nuclear Legacy Series. On July 15, 2026, one day before the anniversary of the first nuclear weapons test ever detonated, we will bring together leading experts to discuss one of the industry’s most persistent challenges: what happens to radioactive waste after it is created.

Beginning at 6:00 pm MT., Tim Judson from the Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) and Dr. Danielle Endres from Communication and Environmental Humanities, University of Utah, will explore long-term radioactive waste management, nuclear fuel reprocessing, and the legacy issues that communities face long after nuclear facilities are built. Together, they will discuss the environmental, health, economic, and social implications of radioactive waste and what these challenges mean for Utah as state leaders pursue an expanded nuclear future.
