ACT NOW: ASK CONGRESS TO SUPPORT THE STRONGER COMMUNITIES THROUGH BETTER TRANSIT ACT!

Earlier this year, the Stronger Communities through Better Transit Act was introduced in Congress. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Henry Johnson (D-GA), would reshape the way public transit is funded across the country.

Background

Currently, the federal transit program primarily provides funding for capital expenses (ex. purchasing buses and trains, building new stops, etc.), but not for operating expenses (ex. fuel, wages, etc.). That means states and local governments can receive federal funding to build public transit infrastructure, but not funding to run the actual public transit service. Operating expenses create a significant hurdle for local governments, accounting for two-thirds of the total cost of public transportation.

The Stronger Communities through Better Transit Act would create an ongoing federal funding source to support transit operations, which would allow communities to provide more reliable and accessible public transit options.

Improving Access and Reliability

Nearly half of Americans don’t have access to public transit, with low-income communities and communities of color facing the greatest barriers. This disparity largely stems from the reliance on local and state tax revenue to fund transit, meaning wealthier communities have more resources to allocate towards public transit funding. The Stronger Communities through Better Transit Act would provide local governments with a more equitable and reliable funding stream for public transit.

Driving Economic Growth

Public transportation connects communities, creating better mobility and more economic opportunities. 87% of public transit trips connect riders to employment opportunities and local businesses and as a result, every $1 invested in public transit generates about $4 in economic benefits. People rely on public transit to get to work, school, doctor’s appointments, and more.
